Cullinan
General Information
The small town of Cullinan is located 30km east of Pretoria along the R513 regional route. It was here that Sir Thomas Cullinan discovered a rich diamond pipe here in 1902 and soon after, the famed Cullinan Diamond, the largest in the world at 3106 carats, was bought by the Transvaal government and presented to King Edward VII.
Things to do in Cullinan include a day at the the Cullinan Golf Club, featuring a 9-hole golf course that may be as much as 100 years old, a testament to Cullinan's deep historical roots.
Although Cullinan is a relatively small town it is a must see for tourists in the area as many of the old buildings are well preserved and the town caters for tourists with its coffee shops, restaurants and quant setting.
Activties and Attractions
Nearby areas provide extra entertainment for the restless visitor. One of the main attractions in the surrounds is the Rietvlei Nature Reserve, built around the Rietvlei dam, visitors can expect to see a large variety of animals including cheetah, leopard, buffalo and white rhino. For the less nature oriented visitors, the dam offers a number of sporting activities with fishing being the main attraction.
