Mamelodi
General Information
Mamelodi is a township located in Gauteng Province and is part of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. It is bordered by Magaliesberg Mountain on the northern and eastern sides and the Pretoria-Witbank highway on the south. Mamelodi is build on a farm in Vlakfontein. The name changed in the late 1950's to Mamelodi, the name given to president Paul Kruger by the Blacks because of his ability to whistle and imitate birds. Mamelodi also means 'Mother of Melodies'.
The township is home to the Mamelodi Sundowns soccer team of the ABSA Premier League and the Mamelodi Bees of the South African Women's Basketball League.
