Dinokeng
General Information
"Dinokeng" is obtained from the languages of the Bapedi and Batswana tribes who tradisionally dwelled the area. Dinokeng literally means "a place of rivers". Dinokeng lies in an area where two rivers comes together. The river flow into the Olifants and Limpopo rivers and on to the Indian Ocean.
The water in Dinokeng is highly valued - some 240 000ha. The water is dominated by sandy bushveld.
Dinokeng is an ambition of the Gauteng government to improve tourism in the Gauteng area. The Dinokeng Game Reserve is situated in this area as well as the Cullinan and Roodeplaat area.
The Dinokeng Game Reserve is Gauteng’s only game reserve on which the Big Five roam free and fend for themselves naturally. Dinokeng also has a range of wildlife and bird species, including some unique species such as the African finfoot and tinkling cisticola.
The small town of Cullinan is located 30km east of Pretoria along the R513 regional route. It was here that Sir Thomas Cullinan discovered a rich diamond pipe here in 1902 and soon after, the famed Cullinan Diamond, the largest in the world at 3106 carats, was bought by the Transvaal government and presented to King Edward VII.
Roodeplaat is home to a picturesque dam and nature reserve which is popular among water-sport enthusiasts and bird lovers. The residents of Roodeplaat enjoy rowing, boating and angling on the northern end of the dam, with bird and wildlife lovers on the southern end.
Dinokeng South enjoys a moderate climate with hot summer months with most rainfall as thunderstorms in the afternoon and cool to very cold winter months.
