ABOUT SOUTHERN AFRICA TRUST

The Southern Africa Trust was established in 2005, to support civil society organisations in southern Africa to participate effectively and with credibility in policy dialogue so that the voices of the poor can have better impact in the development of public policies.

Our mandate is to work on a non-profit basis, to engage in activities that contribute to the reduction of poverty & inequality. In delivering this mandate, we strive to strengthen the voices of poor people in public policy processes.

Evidence based Policy Advocacy and Capability Builder for non-state and intergovernmental institutions for pro-poor policy, convener of dialogues for policy influence.

  • At the Southern Africa Trust, we place premium value on knowledge generation, sharing and application in policy development and monitoring. Our policy dialogues are anchored on research evidence and the voices of informal and marginalised groups directly affected by poverty and inequality.

Creator of alliances, networks and coalitions in policy influence. Builder of public-private-civil society collaborations.

  • We have built up a unique network in a wide range of fields such as agriculture, trade, mining, migration, philanthropy, regional integration, gender justice, youth empowerment and others.
  • Based on our work over the last 14 years, we are in the position to bring together regional and national representatives of governments, private sector and civil society to support and facilitate long-term engagements of stakeholders in policy dialogues to co-create pro-poor solutions.
  • As the Trust, we collaborate with regional civil society and private sector umbrella organizations and have access to national constituencies of these regional bodies.

Promoter of African philanthropy initiatives for sustaining the civil society sector.

  • As part of a longer-term strategy to support funding for civil society and the development sector across Southern Africa, we provided technical support to Wits University to develop the Chair of African Philanthropy with a Business Case and financing options for the university’s Executive Management Programme. Philanthropists and the private sector will be approached to provide scholarships for the programme.

Knowledge hub and interpreter of regional policy space.

  • We are recognized for our extensive strategic knowledge, internally and through networks, in significant areas that relate to the interaction between regional integration and poverty.

Broker of systemic change through innovative approaches, a regional grant maker and re-granting facility with various grant sizes, sectors, organisations across SADC countries.

  • We are a unique grant making and policy dialogue brokering agency that works on regional level support to civil society formations in southern Africa. We can demonstrate the impact that our innovative approach has had to broker systemic change in how pro-poor policy development happens in the SADC region, through the creation of stronger, more credible, informed, and institutionalized relationships of cohesion and accountability between civil society formations, the private sector and governments.
  • We directly (through active programme interventions in capacity building including knowledge development, policy dialogue, creating an enabling environment, and evidence-based advocacy) and indirectly (through grant making to more than 120 partner civil society formations) as a pro-active change agent towards participatory governance for more effective poverty reduction policies and strategies.
